OLD CAROLINA, USA. A mid-late season, striking bicolor variety well worth waiting for in the second half of the season. The fruits have a rounded-flattened shape, orange in color with a rich pink blush covering nearly the entire surface, weighing 450-500 grams. The fruits are dense and heavy, free of cracks and green spots! A true beauty! The plant grows up to 1.8 meters tall in open ground, strong and sturdy, with thick, reliable stems.
Yield is moderate, but all tomatoes are remarkably uniform. The flesh has a firm consistency both outside and inside and does not leak. When cut open, it reveals aromatic, dense orange flesh, small seed cavities, and gel-like juice with a honey-sweet taste! The flesh is bright and juicy, with a fruity aroma. The flavor is simply excellent: rich, not watery, very juicy, with an intense aroma and sweet-spicy notes! I will definitely grow it again at the first opportunity!
VARIETY HISTORY
This rare tomato was revived by Bevin Cohen, owner of @small_house_farm. The seeds had been stored in a freezer in North Carolina for over 50 years before being brought back to life. Story from @slowfoodusa:
“Nell Bryson was an avid gardener. As a housewife in North Carolina, she mostly kept her seeds in the freezer. In 1948, she froze a packet containing ten small tomato seeds, which were rediscovered and grown 68 years later. The ‘Nell Bryson’ tomato, also known as ‘Old Carolina,’ carries two names because its full history is not yet uncovered. What is known is that it is a very large tomato. Its fruit can reach 1 to 1.5 pounds, and unlike most large tomato varieties, it appears not to stop fruiting after producing just a few tomatoes. Top marks for beauty and taste!”
