GRANDFATHER ASHLOCK. An heirloom tomato variety with a nearly century-long history. Originating from Kentucky, USA, it was cultivated by Carl Ashlock’s family since 1920. Thanks to renowned tomato enthusiast and seed saver Craig LeHoullier, the seeds were preserved and shared with the public, ensuring this rare legacy variety lives on for future generations.
This is an indeterminate, mid-season variety with vigorous growth and abundant yields. Plants grow up to 1.8 m. tall and require staking, pruning, and proper support. The bushes are strong, with a well-developed root system and large, dark green potato-leaf foliage that provides good protection against sunscald. Fruits are large, round-flattened in shape, uniform, firm, and glossy-skinned.
VARIETY CHARACTERISTICS
The ripe fruits are deep pink with a subtle raspberry hue. The flesh is meaty, moderately juicy, with very few seeds. The flavor is outstanding — rich, sweet, with fruity notes and a delicate tangy undertone. The aroma is pleasant and distinctly tomato-fruity. Average fruit weight ranges from 250 to 800 grams, though some fruits may exceed 1 kg with proper care.
