RUBY GOLD. An heirloom variety originating in the USA. It was first described in 1921 by John Lewis in the Floral Park, New York catalogue. According to the Seed Savers Yearbook, it was renamed “Gold Medal” by Ben Quisenberry in 1976. This is a tall, mid-season, and high-yielding variety that combines striking appearance, exceptional taste, and consistent productivity. The fruits are round-flattened, close to heart-shaped, with subtle ribs, giving them a decorative appeal.
Fruit weight ranges from large 260 g to very large — over 520 g, with each subsequent harvest showing increased size and improved flavor. The skin is light yellow with a delicate pink blush at the top and is very firm. The flesh is meaty, with red veins and a marbled pattern, giving the fruits a unique attractiveness. The taste is perfectly balanced: soft, sweet, low-acid, with a bright fruity aroma, refreshing and pleasant with every bite.
This variety is rightly considered one of the best of the season. By the end of summer, the fruits become the sweetest in their category, demonstrating the ideal balance of sweetness and juiciness. This tomato is not only delicious but also visually impressive, making it perfect for fresh consumption, salads, decorative table presentation, and preserving. A true discovery for gourmets and tomato enthusiasts.
