VIOLET NOIR (BLACK-PURPLE). A mid-season, medium-height and highly productive Belgian family heirloom variety. Discovered in 1998 and developed by Pascal Moreau at L'Ortie Culture farm in Stave. It stands out for its stability and easy cultivation. In open ground, plants typically reach 1-1.2 m, forming strong, sturdy, well-leafed bushes with a powerful root system. Large, deep-green leaves protect the fruits from sunscald and help retain soil moisture.
Fruits are large, weighing 220-400 g, round-flattened in shape, with a rich purple-violet skin free from spots or cracks. The flesh is meaty, juicy, and sweet, with a rich, well-balanced flavor and a bright tomato aroma. Perfect for fresh salads and slicing as well as for sauces and fragrant juices. With proper care, some fruits can become even larger while remaining visually appealing, dense, and easy to transport.
This is one of the most productive dark-fruited varieties we have ever grown—worthy of a “six-plus” on a five-point yield scale. Seeds sourced from France showed exceptional resilience: even in the cool, dry 2020 season the plants produced an excellent harvest while maintaining outstanding flavor. An ideal choice for home gardeners and collectors who appreciate rare family heirlooms with a rich history.
