SUMO. The variety (hybrid "Enormous Plum" × "Florida") was developed by breeder Fred Bruns from Carmel, Indiana, USA. The origin of this tomato is Canadian. It is a mid-season, indeterminate, vigorous, and highly productive variety that gained popularity thanks to its giant fruits and consistent yields. In open ground, plants reach about 2 meters in height, and in greenhouses, they grow even taller. Plants are strong, well-leaved, with regular foliage type.
The variety is characterized by continuous growth and fruit set throughout the season. Fruits are very large: it is rare to find specimens weighing less than 400 g. The average weight is 500-800 g, with many fruits exceeding 1-1.5 kg. Record specimens reached up to 2674 g. Shape ranges from round and slightly ribbed to strongly lobed or even irregular, especially among giant fruits. Flesh is dense, meaty, juicy, with small and sometimes partially hollow seed cavities.
FLAVOR AND USE
The taste is rich, slightly sweet, with a pronounced tomato aroma. The fruit color is bright red and uniform. Maturity occurs approximately 85–90 days after transplanting. To obtain record-breaking fruits, pruning and limiting the number of fruit sets are recommended. The variety shows strong resilience even under unfavorable conditions: in drought and without care, fruits can still reach 700-800 g.
The tomatoes are versatile in use. They are excellent for fresh consumption, juices, sauces, lecho, and paste. Due to their huge size, they are less suitable for whole-fruit canning, but they surpass most other varieties in flavor and culinary qualities. This tomato is rightly considered a champion among large-fruited varieties and will delight both amateur gardeners and experienced tomato enthusiasts.
