AKER'S WEST VIRGINIA, USA. A family heirloom from Karl Aker, a native of West Virginia. A large, slightly ribbed, beautiful tomato with a rich red color. Plant height in open ground is about 1.5 meters. Fruit weight ranges from 250 to 550 grams. Very meaty and low in juice. Firm and juicy flesh, well-balanced taste, and intense old-fashioned tomato aroma. Since 1993, Karl Aker has been restoring heirloom tomato varieties, sharing them with Craig LeHoullier. Published in the Seed Savers Yearbook in 1997.
Large red beefsteak-type fruits, more or less flattened. A wide indentation at the stem, from which radial grooves may extend; the blossom scar is in line with the stem. One of the 100 tomato varieties described in Carolyn Male's book “100 Heirloom Tomatoes for the American Garden.” We acquired seeds of this variety in France. We recommend this classic tomato to all fans of American beefsteaks. We'd also like to share with you some similar varieties from this state.
SIMILAR VARIETIES:
West Virginia is known for several tomato varieties that are popular for their unique characteristics and histories. Some of them include:
- West Virginia 63: Bred in 1943 at West Virginia University. Main benefits are disease resistance (especially to late blight) and consistent yield. Medium-sized fruits with deep red color and sweet flavor. Suitable for canning and fresh use.
- Mortgage Lifter (Radiator Charlie's): Though often associated with West Virginia, this variety’s history ties into several Appalachian states. Named after a Virginia farmer who sold these tomatoes to pay off his mortgage. Large, meaty, pink-red fruits with a pleasant, sweet flavor.
- Mountain Pride: Developed in the Appalachians, including West Virginia. Crack-resistant variety with large, red fruits and dense texture. Excellent for fresh consumption.
