BABYLONS GLOW. Mid-season variety of a very rare ochre-golden color, both inside and outside. The plant is strong, with 4–5 fruits per cluster, each weighing 120–140 grams. The yield is above average. The fruit shape ranges from round to round-elongated. Medium-height, mid-season, productive variety with a long fruiting period.

The skin features green streaks and stripes. A compact dwarf with wrinkled dark green leaves. This outstanding variety was bred by Blaine Horton from the USA. Well suited for growing in limited soil volume — small gardens, balconies, pots, planters, or containers.

GROWING BABYLONS GLOW:

When grown in a large pot in a sheltered space (e.g. greenhouse or balcony), the fruiting period can last 6–7 months. In our open field, the plants reached 1 meter in height. The first fruits weighed 250–350 g. The fruits are round, slightly heart-shaped, orange-green and striped on the outside, orange inside.

Fleshy, “creamy,” juicy, very tasty, sweet, with a soft fruity-melon aroma (the breeder calls it a “tropical fruit punch”) and a pleasant sweet aftertaste. This variety is meant to surprise and delight you. According to the breeder, it has been stabilized to F8, and he is now working on fixing the heart-shaped form of the fruit.

We obtained seeds from Poland and France. In cross-section, the tomato has mustard-colored flesh, aromatic, with seed chambers only around the edges. The rest is solid flesh. Very meaty, juicy fruits with a rich, intense, bright real tomato flavor. Absolutely delicious.

The yield was excellent, though the flavor doesn’t quite match Uluru Ochre, it’s noticeably less sweet. That said, I still really liked the variety. It stores well and works great both in fresh salads and for preserving.

A compact dwarf - a small plant with dark green, wrinkled foliage. It was grown in a small pot of about 9 liters, which stayed by the entrance to the greenhouse all season long. Even on sunny days, I tried not to disturb it or move the pot outside. Despite the limited soil volume, the plant did relatively well. During hot days, I watered it both in the morning and evening, though the topsoil was always covered. I planted two seedlings in the pot and trained each into two stems from the very beginning. I tried to keep the foliage throughout the season, only removing a few lower leaves.

I could hardly wait for the fruits to ripen — I expected something truly unique! And once again, this breeder didn’t disappoint. The fruits started ripening in early August. They were mostly small, with an oval to heart-like shape, ochre-colored with dark marbling on top, and bronze-orange flesh. When cut open, it looked like a glowing orange blaze inside — that’s where the variety gets its name! The texture was wonderfully creamy, with a nice level of sweetness. It truly surprised and delighted me!

Yes, Babylon is similar in color and flesh texture to Uluru Ochre, but Uluru is definitely sweeter. Still, both varieties have that hint of spice in their flavor, it’s a different kind of sweetness and taste compared to traditional tomatoes. Overall, it’s a great little dwarf: productive and with excellent shelf life.

Mine grew in a 12-liter pot and reached about 60-70 cm tall, definitely not more. The plant was sturdy and compact, didn’t produce too many side shoots, and the fruits were absolutely beautiful.

One of the best dwarf varieties from the Dwarf Project that I’ve grown so far. It was grown in a greenhouse near the entrance, in the middle row. I didn’t prune it, and the plant grew vigorously - up to 1 meter tall. It was very productive.

The foliage is typical for dwarf varieties: broad and wrinkled. Ideally, it needs a well-lit spot and strong support to handle the heavy yield. By the end of the season, the plant was barely standing, propped up by just two stakes 😄

The fruits were stunning, striped, plum-shaped, and ochre-colored when fully ripe. Average weight was around 100 grams, with some reaching up to 180 grams. The flesh was oily, orange-brown, and absolutely delicious 😋! It had a rich, complex sweet-and-tart flavor. Among all the ochre-colored varieties I’ve tried, this one came the closest in taste to the famous Uluru Ochre.

I’ve come to the conclusion that while this variety is truly stunning in appearance, its flavor falls short compared to Uluru Ochre. Interestingly, the more modest Girl from Loxton, which was growing right next to it, turned out to be exceptionally tasty. If the flavor had been just a bit better, it would’ve been a solid 5!
