BELARUSIAN EARLY. This is a Belarusian commercial variety, the original name of which was lost during seed exchanges. A red early-ripening low-growing cherry tomato up to 70 cm tall. Small fruits weighing from 30 to 50 grams. Perfectly and brightly colored, without spots near the stem. Medium density, with excellent rich tomato flavor.
Indeterminate variety with regular leaves. Small round bright red fruits, some slightly ribbed, but most are smooth. Taste — sweet, rich. Excellent for canning as well as for fresh consumption, such as in salads. Excellent yield from the very beginning of the season. The original material was obtained by us from France.
VARIETY HISTORY
In the mid-2000s, gardener Andrey Baranovsky from Minsk (Belarus) sent seeds to many gardeners in North America, labeling the package as "Belarusian early". It is likely that someone took this label as the name of the variety, and the seeds began to spread under this name.
Unfortunately, a similar situation occurred with other varieties that Andrey sent to North America. As a result, under the name "Belarusian Early" today, several different tomatoes are known — both orange and red, both determinate and indeterminate.
BELARUSIAN TOMATOES
Belarusian tomato varieties are the result of adaptation to the challenging climatic conditions characteristic of Belarus: a short warm season, high humidity, and the risk of frost.
Therefore, they have several distinct features:
-
Cold resistance and early maturity: most varieties are bred for cultivation in open ground in temperate climates. They are characterized by a short growing period — from sowing to the first fruits can take only 90–100 days.
-
Low bushes (determinacy): many Belarusian varieties are compact, which facilitates care and makes them convenient for greenhouses and small plots. Height rarely exceeds 0.6–0.8 m.
-
Disease resistance: breeding was carried out taking into account high humidity and the risk of late blight. They often have high resistance to fungal diseases and fruit cracking.
-
Stable yield: even in unfavorable weather, they provide a stable harvest. Fruits set well in conditions of lack of sunlight.
-
Excellent taste and versatility: Belarusian tomatoes often have a rich "classic" taste, with a balance of sweetness and acidity. Suitable for both fresh consumption and processing (canning, sauces, juice).
-
Examples of well-known varieties: Belarusian – cherry with excellent taste and early harvest. White Filling 241 – one of the oldest popular varieties, resistant and productive. Minsk Productive – high-yielding and transportable variety.
