CHARBONNEUSE DU BERRY. A rare, mid-season French tomato variety, also known as Charbonnière du Berry. This is an old heirloom variety originating from the historic Berry region in central France. It is valued for its unusual dark-colored fruits, meaty flesh, and rich flavor. The fruits are round-heart-shaped or flattened-round. Their color ranges from smoky purple to dark brown and brick brown. They typically weigh 100–250 g, although they can grow considerably larger under favorable growing conditions.
The flesh is juicy, firm, and meaty, with a slightly sweet taste and a pronounced tomato aroma. The fruits are excellent for fresh eating, salads, and slicing. They also have relatively good keeping quality for a dark-fruited variety. The plants are semi-determinate and relatively compact, usually reaching 1.2–1.5 m in a greenhouse and approximately 0.8–1.2 m outdoors.
VARIETY HISTORY
The name Charbonneuse du Berry is associated with the French word charbon, meaning “coal,” and refers to the fruits’ characteristic dark, smoky-purple and brick-brown coloring. The exact history of the variety’s development has not been documented. It is believed to be a traditional local heirloom (variété de pays) that gardeners in central France cultivated for decades. In the early 2000s, the variety began appearing on European forums for rare-seed collectors.
Later, URGC, an organization dedicated to preserving agricultural biodiversity in central France, rediscovered and documented this heirloom tomato through its work with local farmers in the Cher department. Charbonneuse du Berry is an interesting choice for collectors and enthusiasts of historic French varieties seeking tomatoes with unusual dark coloring, meaty flesh, and a rich heritage.
