DWARF BETTY’S SMILE. A new variety for 2024-2025 from the series of dwarf tomatoes, combining a powerful bush, large fruits, and a very pleasant taste. The variety was obtained by crossing the chartreuse variety Mullens Mortgage Lifter and Dwarf Jade Beauty. This cross marked the beginning of the so-called "Betty family" within the Dwarf Tomato Project. The plant is of the dwarf type, yet very vigorous and robust. The bushes have thick stems, are well-leafed, bushy, with wrinkled (rugose) regular leaves. Height in open ground averages 1.0-1.2 meters. The variety is mid-season, suitable for cultivation both in open ground and in greenhouses.
The fruits are flattened (oblate) in shape, pink in color, of medium to large size. Fruit weight typically ranges from 170 to 350 g. The tomatoes are meaty, juicy, attractive in appearance, and well-suited for fresh consumption as well as for salads, and sauces. The taste is very commendable: mild, sweet, well-balanced, with a pleasant aroma and harmonious aftertaste. It is precisely for its taste qualities that the variety is especially valued among collectors of heirloom tomatoes. The history of the variety's creation is quite interesting.
The hybridization (Pale Leaf Mortgage Lifter × Dwarf Jade Beauty) was performed by Craig LeHoullier. Further selection and stabilization work was carried out by Susan Oliverson, who gave the variety the name Betty’s Smile. The seeds were propagated by Bill Minkey and passed to Mike Dunton for cultivation and preparation for release 2024. The variety was officially introduced to the wide gardening audience by Victory Seed Company for the 2025 season. We really liked this release and recommend it to enthusiasts of the Dwarf series.
