DEATON’S DWARF. A compact, productive variety from the Dwarf Tomato series, producing a sturdy, standard-type plant with rugose leaves. The plant typically reaches 70–100 cm (28–39 in) in height. Its compact growth habit takes up little space while providing a good crop of large, attractive tomatoes. The variety is suitable for growing outdoors and in greenhouses. The fruits are round, usually weighing up to 200 g (7 oz), although some can reach 300 g (10.6 oz). The skin ranges in color from chocolate brown to deep burgundy.
The flesh is juicy and either pink-raspberry or rich burgundy. The flavor is sweet and pronounced, with a pleasant fruity tang that adds balance and complexity. These tomatoes are excellent for fresh salads and slicing. The variety was officially introduced in 2022. Dwarf Deaton’s is an open-pollinated variety, so seeds can be saved for future growing while maintaining its characteristics, provided the plants are isolated from other varieties during flowering.
VARIETY HISTORY
The variety was developed by Australian breeder Patrina Nuske Small by crossing the dwarf tomato Kangaroo Paw Yellow with Grozny 91. Amanda Fischer carried out further selection and stabilization of the line and named the variety in honor of her family or loved ones. Other contributors to its development and promotion included Ed Fizzell, Susan Oliverson, Bill Minkey, Mike Danton, and John Danton.
