DWARF RADINILEE, CANADA. A medium-sized, early-ripening, and high-yielding variety that is part of the well-known Dwarf breeding program. The first fruits ripened simultaneously with standard low-growing early varieties. During the initial tasting, the tomatoes impressed with their rich, sweet, and well-balanced flavor — earning a deserved 5 out of 5.
However, in the middle of the season, during the peak ripening period, the flavor became somewhat less expressive. At that stage, we rated the taste at 4. The aroma remained fruity and appealing, but a bit of tanginess appeared. The plant is compact, not exceeding 1.5 meters in height. Fruits are very dark purple with deep green shoulders.
This rare tomato variety is believed to have Russian origins, although there is no verified information about its original name — it may have been lost or changed. Dwarf Radinilee was first mentioned in the Seed Savers Yearbook in 1999. The texture and interior appearance of the flesh resemble Black Pineapple. Fruit weight ranges from 120 to 250 g.
FLAVOR AND FRUIT:
The taste is notably deep, with earthy and smoky undertones — typical of dark-colored tomato varieties. Normally, most varieties become sweeter mid-season, but in this case, there was a noticeable decrease in flavor intensity. It’s likely that the variety was originally bred for cooler climates.
Fruits are juicy and tender with thin skins, easily damaged when pressed. Best used fresh or processed immediately after harvest. Not recommended for long transport unless handled with great care. Seeds were sourced directly from Canada.
