DWARF SONROJO MONSTER. This variety was bred and introduced in 2022 as the result of meticulous work within the Dwarf Tomato. It is one of the representatives of the dwarf tomato series, developed specifically for compact yet productive cultivation. The plants have potato-type foliage and stable growth, with a reputation for high yield.
They form neat, sturdy bushes that produce abundant crops of medium to large fruits. The tomatoes are smooth, raspberry-pink in color, most often heart-shaped, though other shapes may also occur. Visually appealing, they look attractive both on the vine and in a basket. The flesh is dense and meaty, with few seeds.
The flavor is balanced, rich, with mild sweetness and fruity undertones, making these tomatoes perfect for fresh eating as well as for culinary use-salads, sauces, and preserves. Fruit weight ranges from 250 to 600 g. The plants grow up to 1.2 m. tall and are resistant to lodging, though the heavy fruit makes strong staking necessary.
VARIETY ORIGIN:
This tomato belongs to the Ivalde family line, one of the breeding lines of the DTP. It was created by crossing the indeterminate varieties ‘Vjerino Paradajiz Sjeme’ and ‘Wherokowhai’. The cross was made by Søren Linnemann. Selection and stabilization were carried out by Linda Black. The name was coined by Lee Melendez.
The project was also supported by prominent tomato enthusiasts Craig LeHoullier, Bill Minkey, Mike Dunton, and John Dunton. Their involvement adds significant scientific and practical value to the variety. It performs well both in open ground and in greenhouses without compromising taste quality.
FEATURES OF DWARF TOMATOES
Dwarf tomatoes offer several benefits that make them popular among gardeners:
-
Compact size: These plants stay short — typically between 60 and 90 cm. This makes them ideal for growing in limited spaces such as balconies, containers, or small greenhouses.
-
Low maintenance: Dwarf tomatoes generally don’t require staking or extensive pruning, which simplifies care. Their compact form also helps reduce branch breakage.
-
Good productivity: Despite their small size, dwarf varieties are highly productive. Fruits vary in size, shape, and color — from tiny cherry tomatoes to large beefsteaks.
-
Excellent flavor: Many dwarf varieties are known for their rich, sweet, and aromatic taste, making them especially suitable for fresh eating.
