DWARF TANUNDA RED. A productive, mid-season variety from the Dwarf Tomato series, known for its large fruits and compact growth habit. The sturdy, standard-type plant typically reaches 0.5–1 m outdoors and can grow up to 1.5 m in a greenhouse. Its combination of a manageable plant size and large tomatoes makes it suitable for both garden beds and greenhouse cultivation. The fruits are flattened and round, with meaty flesh and a red to bright red colour, sometimes showing a slight pink tint. They usually weigh 120–300 g, making Tanunda Red one of the large-fruited varieties in its series. The flesh is juicy and firm, with few seeds and a rich, well-balanced tomato flavour.
These tomatoes are excellent for fresh salads, slicing and preparing a variety of homemade dishes. The variety was developed in 2008 by Australian breeder Patrina Nuske Small by crossing Wilpena, a dwarf variety from the Sleepy Family line, with the well-known tomato Cherokee Purple. The initial hybrid was named Plentiful. Patrina, together with other project participants, including Craig LeHoullier, Carol Knapp, Sandra Tipton and Marsha Eisenberg, carried out further selection, stabilisation and naming. Tanunda Red was named after the town of Tanunda in South Australia's Barossa wine region, where its creator comes from. Around 2015, the variety became more widely available.
