DWARF WILLA'S CARIBOO ROSE, Australia. This variety was developed between 2006 and 2016 as part of the “Dwarf Tomato Project” and is considered relatively new. It belongs to the Sleepy F1 line and was created by crossing 'Budai Torpe' with 'Peaceful Pond'. The breeding work was carried out, in particular, by Patrina Nuske Small in 2005–2006. It produces well in mid-season.
The goal was to create a tomato with red fruit, but it turned out to produce pink ones instead. The plant is determinate, with rugose, potato-type leaves. The fruits are dense, uniform, and have excellent flavor. It is an easy-to-grow and disease-resistant tomato. Originally named “Wilpena”, it was later renamed “Willa’s Cariboo Rose”. Fruit weight ranges from 150 to 300 grams.
These are beefsteak-type tomatoes, slightly flattened at the poles, with subtle ribbing near the stem. Fruit shape can vary from nearly round shoulders to more pronounced ones, depending on the size. The flavor is typical of pink tomatoes — rich and well-balanced. The plant reaches up to 1 meter tall, has rugose potato foliage, and grows indeterminately.
ADVANTAGES OF DWARF TOMATOES
Dwarf tomatoes offer a range of benefits that make them popular among gardeners:
-
Compact size: These short plants (usually 60–90 cm) are ideal for small garden spaces, balconies, or container growing.
-
Low maintenance: Dwarf plants rarely need staking or pruning, and their dense structure helps prevent branch breakage.
-
High yield: Despite their small size, dwarf plants provide generous harvests. Fruit comes in many shapes, sizes, and colors — from tiny cherries to large beefsteaks.
-
Great flavor: Dwarf tomatoes are known for their intense, sweet, and aromatic taste, perfect for fresh eating.
