EARLY DETROIT. Is an old commercial tomato variety developed back in 1916, and it remains popular among gardeners to this day due to its reliability, stable yields, and excellent flavor. It is a mid-early variety, with the time from sprouting to fruit ripening taking about 100-110 days. The plant is indeterminate (tall), reaching up to 1.8 meters in height, and requires staking and pruning, especially during the active fruiting period. The fruits are round, uniform in size, smooth, and firm, with a rich pink color. Each tomato weighs between 120 and 200 grams. They feature a refined aroma, juicy and meaty flesh, a pleasant sweetness, and a well-balanced flavor without acidity.
The taste rating of ripe fruits is the highest — 5 out of 5. Ideal for fresh consumption, particularly for summer salads. They also perform excellently during heat processing, making the variety highly suitable for canning: the tomatoes don’t crack and retain their shape well. The fruits are long-keeping, transport well, and can be stored for extended periods without losing quality. They produce a delicious, aromatic juice that quenches thirst perfectly. This variety adapts easily to different climatic conditions and requires minimal care.
VARIETY HISTORY
This variety can be described as one with a rich history and outstanding flavor. Originally developed by Mr. Rosendahl from Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, and released by the D.M. Ferry Seed Company of Detroit, Michigan, in 1909, it was a staple in the Detroit area until the mid-20th century. Thanks to dedicated efforts, this heirloom variety has been restored to gardens in Michigan and beyond.
