ELFIN (SPRITE). This tomato variety was developed in Czechia and is considered one of the most successful among date-type tomatoes — primarily due to its rich sweet and tangy flavor. In some sources, it may be listed under the name Sprite. It’s an early-ripening variety with a long fruiting period. The plant grows up to 1.6 meters tall and is highly productive, forming both simple and compound clusters. The plant produces many side shoots at all levels. The stems are slender but strong, with elongated internodes.
Each cluster holds 10 to 20 deep red fruits weighing 15-20 g, shaped like drops. This variety is cold-tolerant and well-suited to regions with cool summers and short growing seasons. The foliage resembles that of potatoes. Up to 12 fruits may set per cluster, each weighing about 20 g. Tying and pruning are essential. The fruits have a very firm texture and pleasantly crunch when bitten into, while offering excellent flavor. The sweetness level may vary from year to year.
AGRONOMY
Tomatoes can be grown indoors, in greenhouses, or outdoors. Optimal germination temperature is 20-25°C, with seedlings emerging in 8-14 days. You can speed up germination by soaking seeds overnight in moist fabric. Plant after the danger of the last frost has passed.
Some years the fruits are moderately sweet, other years — very sweet. The taste is stunning, provocatively sweet, with firm, crunchy walls. Does not crack and fruits until frost. Excellent for fresh eating (kids strip the bushes before full ripeness), preserving, drying, semi-drying, and freezing. Top-rated in every category.
