GHOST OF LAOS, FANTOME DU LAOS. A variety originating from Laos. The plant is strong and vigorous. Fruits are medium-sized and slightly flattened. Their color varies from white to translucent yellow. When ripe and exposed to sunlight, the fruits turn yellow. However, if the fruits are under leaves, they retain a lighter shade, sometimes close to white.

Average fruit weight is 250 to 450 g. Plant height in open ground – 1.5 m. This variety is mainly used in salads. Taste rating – 5 out of 5. Very meaty, with a good balance of sugars and acids, mild flavor; tastes even better when salted – salt enhances the flavor. The taste is very delicate with a barely noticeable sweetness. Good storage qualities and very high productivity.

There is a legend in Laos about this variety: “On a full moon, villagers would place the fruits on the windowsill, and when ghosts approached, the fruits would glow, repelling the spirits.” The seeds were sent to us from France, very old, and out of all the seeds only two plants grew. The tomatoes we grew gave even better results.

HOW TO GROW

• Sow seeds 6–8 weeks before planting date.
• Optimal soil temperature for germination – 23–30°C.
• Once the first true leaves appear, seedlings can be transplanted into plug trays.
• Seedlings grow best at 21–24ºC.
• Transplant to open ground after the risk of frost has passed.
