GROSSE BORDEAU, BIG BORDEAUX. An extremely rare and little-known tomato variety, mentioned only in Jardins de Tomates, making it a true treasure for collectors and lovers of unusual tomatoes. This is an indeterminate (tall) variety — plants reach up to 1.5 m. in height. The bushes are vigorous, well-foliated, and show steady growth with consistent fruit setting throughout the season.Round in shape with moderately pronounced ribbing at the shoulders. The fruit type is beefsteak, with slightly loose but firm shoulders. The skin is a rich dark pink with a purple sheen, and the shoulders are dark green or olive, giving the tomatoes an attractive and distinctive appearance.
Fruits are large, weighing between 180 and 300 g. The stem attachment area has a moderately deep indentation, and small scars may appear — a trait typical of heirloom or rare varieties. The flesh is very meaty, juicy, and tender — dark burgundy inside, with purple tones near the skin and a pink center. The taste is refined and sweet, with light fruity notes typical of dark-colored varieties like "Black Krim" or "Port Wine". Acidity is almost absent, making it especially enjoyable when eaten fresh.
This is a mid-season variety, disease-resistant, with stable productivity and high yields, even in open-field conditions. Thanks to the uniform size and visual appeal of the fruits at all levels of the plant, this variety is perfect both for home growing and small-scale farming. It became one of the favorites of the 2021 and 2022 seasons among rare tomato enthusiasts. While visually and in taste it resembles the “Bordeaux” variety, it also has a unique character of its own, which earned it high appreciation in private collections.
