HARSH MELON OF THE VOLGA GERMANS. A rare heirloom tomato variety whose history is connected to the descendants of German settlers who lived in the Volga region. This variety has been preserved within families for many years and attracts attention with its unusual fruit coloring, distinctive shape, and rich flavor.
This is a mid-season variety with vigorous, indeterminate plants. In a greenhouse, the bushes can reach 1.8–2 meters in height, while outdoors they usually grow to around 1.3–1.5 meters. The leaves have a characteristic drooping habit, and the stems are strong. For a good harvest, the plants should be trained to one or two stems, regularly pruned to remove side shoots, and tied to supports.
The fruits are large, usually weighing 250–500 g. Their shape ranges from flattened-round to heart-shaped. They have an unusual coloring in ochre, orange-brown, and caramel-chocolate tones, often with greenish shoulders. The flesh is tender, juicy, meaty, and buttery. The flavor is sweet and rich, with pronounced fruity and spicy notes and a distinctive aroma.
The variety adapts well to different growing conditions and has good disease resistance. Thanks to their meaty flesh and thick walls, the fruits are suitable for fresh consumption, cooking, and processing. The combination of unusual coloring, large fruits, and rich flavor makes this tomato an appealing choice for collectors and lovers of rare varieties.
