IRISH STRIPED. A mid-season variety that impresses with its exotic beauty, refined coloration, and unusual decorative appearance. It looks more like a Christmas ornament than a tomato — a true highlight of any garden or greenhouse! The plant is compact, about 70 cm. tall in open ground, and provides very stable yields.
This variety is also suitable for greenhouses, container growing, and small spaces. Each cluster forms 4–5 fruits, weighing 170–250 g. Fruit shape is round and slightly flattened — harmonious and attractive. The main color is deep burgundy with bright emerald streaks radiating from the center — incredibly festive and striking.
The flesh is dark, rich red, meaty, nearly uniform, with small seed chambers. The tomato has a dense texture, stores well, and resists cracking. The flavor is rich and deep, with a classic tomato aroma and subtle fruity notes. Especially delicious in fresh salads, but also great for sauces, roasting, and preserving.
IRISH VARIETIES
Ireland doesn't have many original tomato varieties, as the climate isn't very favorable for open-ground cultivation. However, local gardeners actively use greenhouses and develop varieties resistant to cold climates. Some popular varieties that grow well in Ireland include:
-
Balconi Red and Balconi Yellow – compact cherry tomato varieties suitable for open ground and containers. They produce abundant yields and are excellent for colder climates.
-
Tumbling Tom – a trailing cherry tomato variety often grown in hanging baskets. Very easy to grow and tolerant of cooler conditions.
-
Irish Gardener’s Delight – an informal name for varieties popular in Ireland, such as Gardener’s Delight, which are well-suited for greenhouse cultivation in cold climates.
-
Sub Arctic Plenty – a variety bred specifically for cold conditions. Very early, producing yields at low temperatures.
-
Glacier – an early and hardy variety with small red fruits, suitable for regions with short summers.
