JANET’S JACINTHE JEWEL is a tomato variety developed by Brad Gates and named in honor of his wife, Janet. This is one of the most striking and memorable varieties, known for its outstanding visual appeal and exceptional flavor — a true standout among heirlooms and modern cultivars alike. The plant is tall and indeterminate, requiring staking and pruning. In open ground, it grows to about 1.7-1.8 meters, and can grow even taller in greenhouse conditions. A late-season variety, it takes approximately 100-110 days from transplanting to harvest. Fruits are flattened-round in shape, extremely attractive: bright orange with golden-yellow stripes, sometimes with pinkish hues at full ripeness.
These tomatoes look like works of art and can become a centerpiece of any garden or collection. The flesh is meaty, juicy, and rich, despite the relatively thin skin. The flavor is very sweet, well-balanced, with pleasant fruity undertones - often compared to apricot or mango. Ideal for fresh eating, slicing. Average fruit weight is 300 to 800 g, but with good care, giant fruits over 1 kg are possible. This variety is consistently productive, even under challenging weather conditions, showing good resistance to heat, drought, and temperature fluctuations. The foliage is potato-leaf type, large and slightly crinkled. With its beauty, flavor, and reliability, this variety rightfully holds a special place among Brad Gates' creations.
