MORADO DE ARATXABALETA. One of the most iconic and popular late-season tomato varieties, originating from the Basque Country in Spain, specifically from the village of Aretxabaleta. It's worth noting that "Morado" (meaning "purplish") is a generic name used for several varieties with specified geographic origins, such as Morado de Fitera, Morado del Oria, and others. This is a tall-growing variety with strong, vigorous plants that can reach about 2 meters in height when grown in open ground.
The variety is known for its high and stable productivity, making it a favorite among both collectors and farmers. The fruits are large, uniform, weighing from 300 to 600 g, sometimes up to 800 g, slightly flattened with gently ribbed shoulders. Their skin is pinkish-purple with yellow-green shoulders. The flesh is dense, juicy, meaty, and rich, with a pronounced aroma reminiscent of old heirloom tomatoes. The flavor is deep and sweet with a refined tang — a real delicacy for true tomato lovers.
This variety often competes in tasting contests and has repeatedly won awards for its outstanding flavor and texture. It is appreciated and beloved both in its native Spain and internationally. Also known under synonyms: Aretxabaletako moskorra, Borracho de Aretxabaleta. We sourced the seeds of Morado de Aretxabaleta directly from Spain to ensure varietal purity and authenticity.
