ROI HUMBERT (KING HUMBERT). An ancient American heirloom variety, known since before 1800. It was named in honor of the King of Italy and is also referred to as King Humbert or King Umberto. The plants are compact in shape (about 50 cm tall in open ground) yet highly productive and vigorous. The foliage is of the regular type, dense and healthy, providing excellent protection for the fruits against sunscald. The variety is characterized by early and uniform ripening, with the first tomatoes appearing at the beginning of summer and harvest continuing until the first autumn frosts.
The fruits grow in clusters of four to eight, with an elegant pear-like shape and rich red color. Their average weight ranges from 40 to 100 grams, and their length is about 4 cm. The flesh is meaty and firm, while the skin is strong, making the tomatoes resistant to cracking and suitable for transport. Even when harvested green at the end of the season, they ripen well indoors while maintaining high quality. The flavor is sweet, balanced, and pleasantly rich.
This variety is especially valued for its versatility. It is excellent fresh but reveals its best qualities in processing. It produces thick, aromatic paste, rich sauces and ketchup, and is convenient for canning and whole-fruit pickling. It is also well-suited for drying and freezing. King Umberto is a time-honored heirloom that combines attractive fruits, high productivity, excellent taste, and long shelf life.
