SANDBURG CASTLE (SANDBURG GWR). A new, still little-known tomato variety from the USA, developed by breeder Reinhard Kraft. The plant is tall, mid-season, with thick stems. Each cluster produces 3 to 5 flat-round fruits, very juicy and sweet, weighing 200-350 g, sometimes reaching up to 500 g. The skin is thin, with external colors varying in green, pink, and yellow shades. Inside, the fruits have a mix of green and pink tones.
The taste is rich, very sweet, and delicate. The fruits are tender and do not store well after harvest; they may crack partially during rainy weather. Nevertheless, their flavor and enjoyment justify the effort. According to internet sources: "The abbreviation GWR in the name means that Sandburg (or Sandburg Snack, as this variety is also called) was part of the 'Wild Thyme' project. GWR stands for Green When Ripe."
COLOR AND TASTE
Indeed, Sandburg fruits show many green-olive shades, although the tomato's exterior is colored in more pinkish tones compared to the Wild Thyme variety. Overall, these two varieties have much in common in appearance. The plant is tall, strong, mid-season, high-yielding indeterminate. Some collectors have reported pink and even yellow fruits, but all my fruits had exactly this purple hue.
The leaves are of usual shape. Our plant grew to 1.7 meters outdoors. The flesh is juicy, bronze-colored with red streaks in the center. Very bright, with a red core, oily to the touch. The flavor is fantastic — spicy, sweet, very juicy, rich tomato-fruity! A very beautiful, tasty, sweet, and aromatic variety. It deserves a five-star rating for taste!
