SEAN'S YELLOW DWARF. A relatively new variety developed between 2006 and 2013 as part of the Dwarf Project. It is a cross between 'Budai Torpe' and 'Cherokee Green', initiated by Patrina Nuske Small in 2006. Final selection in the F3 generation was carried out by Lee Newman. Public release took place in 2014. Leaves resemble those of potatoes.
An early-maturing variety of medium height (about 1 m.), with a compact, determinate-like growth habit. Flesh is pale yellow with pink marbling, very juicy, and has a bright, rich, and refreshing flavor. Notable for its good productivity and disease resistance. Fruits are orange, flat-round in shape, and weigh between 150 and 300 g.
VARIETY CHARACTERISTICS:
Fruits have distinct coloration at the top, a beefsteak shape with a slightly flattened appearance, and ribbed or lobed shoulders. At the stem attachment point, deep grooves (talwegs) are noticeable. The plant is indeterminate, compact, and tree-like. Yields steadily up until the first frosts.
The tomatoes are meaty and juicy, with a gourmet flavor rated 5 out of 5. For best productivity, it’s recommended to grow the plant with multiple stems. It can be grown in large containers, though this may reduce fruit size and yield. A recommended variety, just like the entire series.
GENERAL FEATURES OF THE DWARF SERIES
The Dwarf Tomato Series is a special group of tomatoes known for their ornamental qualities and compact growth. They are perfect for growing in small spaces like balconies, terraces, or limited garden beds. Key traits include:
- Compact Size: Plants typically reach 60 to 120 cm in height, making them ideal for container growing. Their strong stems eliminate the need for complex staking.
- Variety of Shapes and Colors: Dwarfs can be round, plum-shaped, or ribbed, and come in a wide range of colors: red, pink, yellow, orange, green, purple, even striped. Single- and bi-colored varieties are available.
- Excellent Flavor: Despite their small size, the fruits rival large varieties in taste, ranging from sweet to tangy.
- High Yield: With proper care, these plants produce abundantly and consistently.
- Disease Resistance: Most dwarf varieties are resistant to common tomato diseases, making care easier.
- Low Maintenance: Minimal pruning is required; light shaping is usually sufficient.
- Urban Friendly: Their size and beauty make them ideal for urban settings.
- Various Maturity Dates: Dwarfs include both early and mid-season varieties for a continuous harvest.
