SKYPHEA. A variety from the old settlers of Vershino-Bidzha village near Abakan (Khakassia). The bush grows up to 1 meter, wide, thin, with sprawling drooping leaves. A mid-season variety of a very interesting shape: a plump ribbed bright red plum grows from the stem, which almost at one-third of the fruit ends below with an elongated curved narrow tip. I collected everything that ripened for seeds. A late variety — that’s how it turned out for us, but it might be different because only one seed sprouted, and only one plant grew. And even that — after a belated, repeated sowing of the seed remnants in a warmer place.
The plant stood alone in a cup, the only one on the whole windowsill, in April, when you are only at home at night. One day I noticed that the plant, at a height of about 8-10 cm, had wilted. Its leaves drooped as if the soil had completely dried out. However, the soil was moist. I moved the plant into the greenhouse where the seedlings were kept and warmed it with the energy of my hands, like psychics do without touching the object. I repeated this process daily; the plant revived and straightened its leaves during the first night. I didn’t add water to the cup, afraid the roots might rot.
SKYPHEA SEEDLINGS AND FRUITS
I planted the seedling together with other varieties on time, often came to check on it; the plant grew with extremely thick shoots. Nowhere nearby were there such beautiful and thick shoots, and they lay symmetrically and evenly across the ground, occupying the space between the rows.
I had to tie the plant to the trellis in the classic way. When doing this, I felt with my whole psychology that the plant didn’t like it. Its development then stopped for a while. For a long time, there were no fruits at all, fruit setting and growth happened very late, later enough fruits formed, but late — there wasn’t enough time for ripening.
The fruits have very few seeds and very little juice — basically just flesh. Fruit weight is 120–150 grams. The yield was below average for me; I will definitely grow it again. In the cut, the flesh has small voids, but due to the thick walls, the taste is very worthy, with sweetness. I would say: a variety with character, it needs taming.
