SUNSET RED HORIZON. Mid-season, relatively new variety. The plant is strong, with sturdy stems, reaching 1.4 meters in height. Each cluster bears 3–4 fruits weighing 250–300 g. The fruit is bright red, glossy, round-flattened, and heart-like in shape. The flesh is uniform, slightly buttery, with small seed chambers, and very juicy. The taste is rich, well-balanced, sweet with a hint of acidity.
A hit of the 2019 season, which we had been searching for several years. Vigorous, tall, densely foliated plants with regular leaves. The variety shows high resistance to rot, disease, cracking, and low temperatures. One of the early varieties that produces abundantly throughout the season and is among the last to finish fruiting.
FRUITS AND VARIETY HISTORY
Fruits are of excellent market quality — smooth, spot- and crack-free, mostly heart-shaped with a blunt cone tip. Sometimes slightly ribbed near the stem. Meaty, moderately juicy, with a rich, well-balanced flavor and a pleasant aroma. A Russian variety, though its original name remains unknown.
Exported to the USA in the 1990s by a Russian immigrant. Initially distributed in the U.S. by Gary Ibsen under the name "Rostova", and in 2003 he renamed it "Sunset’s Red Horizon". We rated it highest in all categories. Seeds of this variety were obtained from Poland.
