SWEET SCARLET DWARF, Australia. A modern variety developed between 2007 and 2014 as part of the “Dwarf Tomato Project.” One of the hybrids resulting from the cross of “Golden Dwarf Champion” and “Elbe” (Tipsy (Pompette) F1), bred by Patrina Nuske Small in 2006/7. Selected in the F3 generation by Craig LeHoullier in 2009. Officially introduced in 2015.
Known for its bold and complex flavor, it is considered one of the best-tasting among the new dwarf varieties. The plant is compact and vigorous, with dense potato-leaf foliage. Occasionally, plants may produce yellow or orange fruits, indicating some instability in the variety. Dwarf tomato plants do not require staking or heavy pruning, which makes them easier to care for.
A mid-season, short, and productive variety. The foliage is rugose and of the potato-leaf type. Fruits are large, weighing up to 350 g, round and flattened, red, smooth, with slight ribbing near the stem. The flavor is rich, complex, and vibrant, with a strong aroma. The beefsteak-type fruits are flattened with defined shoulders.
ADVANTAGES OF DWARF TOMATOES
Dwarf tomatoes have several advantages that make them popular among gardeners:
-
Compact size: These tomatoes grow on low bushes, usually not exceeding 60-90 cm in height. This makes them ideal for growing in small gardens, balconies, or containers.
-
Easy care: Dwarf tomato bushes do not require staking or heavy pruning, making them easier to care for. Their compact form also reduces the risk of branch damage.
-
High yield: Despite the small bush size, dwarf tomatoes produce a good harvest. Their fruits can vary in size, shape, and color-from small cherries to large beefsteaks.
-
Flavor qualities: Dwarf tomatoes are known for their excellent taste. Many have a rich, sweet, and aromatic flavor, making them popular for fresh consumption.
