TIFFEN MENNONITE, USA. An early variety of large-fruited tomatoes with a pinkish-raspberry hue, ideal for beefsteak use. In open ground, the plant grows up to about 1.6 m tall, strong and sturdy, with many fruits forming on clusters weighing between 400 and 500 grams. The yield is above average.
The fruit shape is round and slightly flattened, very attractive for commercial sale. The color is a rich pink with pronounced ribs near the base, free of green spots or “shoulders.” The taste is bright, sweet with a slight tanginess. The flesh is dense and juicy, not crumbly, very flavorful. Seed cavities are few and small — mostly the fruit is flesh.
Growers of this variety consider it one of the tastiest tomatoes. This variety won the American best taste contest in 2003. The plants are tall and productive, mid-season, with broad potato-like leaves. It is a heritage variety originally grown by Mennonites, a religious community from Wisconsin.
FRUITS AND FLAVOR
Fruits are large, meaty, juicy with a sweet, balanced, excellent flavor and rich aroma, weighing up to 600 g. This is a large-fruited, beautiful tomato with outstanding taste. Extremely high yield. During the 2018 drought, it still set fruit very well. As of July 15, 2018, one plant had 31 large fruits in 7 clusters.
However, in early September, when the plants were severely lacking water, some small voids appeared in the seed chambers. But the plants held up well. There were so many ripe fruits that it was hard to eat them all fresh, so they should be used for making juice and other tomato products.
