TUNDRA, Canada. Another stunning heart-shaped tomato from Canadian breeder Karen Olivier, developed as part of her True North series. This is a highly anticipated new variety, awaited with the same excitement as Taiga was in its time! In 2018, Taiga caused a real sensation due to its exceptional flavor and the striking appearance of its giant bicolor heart-shaped fruits. In terms of characteristics, Tundra is very similar to Taiga. It is a mid-season plant, growing to a height of 1.8-1.9 meters, with potato-type foliage. The variety is indeterminate and highly productive. The fruits are large, heart-shaped tomatoes in red-purple shades, growing in clusters of 3-4, and weighing between 300 and 800 g.
The flavor during the first harvest was less pronounced, but later fruits revealed their full potential. One of the top varieties. The flesh is dense, purple, and covered with a semi-transparent skin. The tomato color is brownish-purple with a pearlescent sheen. The inner flesh is oily, bicolored, deep red-brown. The skin is not very dense — it can’t be, with so much juice in the fruit. When cut, the juice flows freely (visible in the cross-section photo). The flavor is no worse than Taiga: sweetness and juiciness are off the charts.
The aroma and melting tenderness make this variety unforgettable! Perfect both for fresh salads and for making sauces. We gave it a guaranteed 5 points for flavor. The flavor is wonderful and rich, the flesh is tender and juicy, though not overly sweet. Few voids or gel inside. Slightly salted, the tomato tastes even better. Perfect for fresh use and for making tomato sauces. A very good variety. However, it was a sunless year — cloudy skies and lots of moisture didn’t enhance the flavor.
