WESTERLUND 1-26. A new variety created by Dale Thurber and named after the massive red supergiant star Westerlund 1-26, located in the constellation Ara. Plant height is 1.5 meters, with 4–5 fruits per cluster weighing 300–740 grams. A mid-season beefsteak type with a pleated shape and plump shoulders at the base.
Deep rich pink color, ribbed skin, no cracks or unripe patches. All this gives the fruit a “tasty” and beautiful appearance. Color is raspberry-pink, with flesh of the same tone: watermelon-like and meaty. Moderately juicy and sweet. This tomato is the result of a controlled cross between two giant tomato types:
- Bigzarro, with fruits reaching nearly 4 pounds;
- Delicious, seeds taken from a 6.51-pound tomato grown by Meisner in 2011.
This turned out to be a very successful combination, and several growers have already reported on the Westerlund variety. Massive, healthy vines, very thick stems, heavy yields, and gigantic tomatoes. The variety has a pleasant flavor, excellent for thick sandwich slices—or just one tomato is enough to make sauce for a whole pot of spaghetti!
SIMILAR VARIETIES:
There are several raspberry-pink tomato types. This is a rather rare color pattern due to its nonstandard pigmentation. Here are a few striking examples:
- “Red Raspberry”: Known for its sweet flavor and raspberry-pink skin. Typically used fresh or in salads.
- “Malinovka”: Also known as “Pink Raspberry”. Produces large, juicy fruits with great flavor. Often used for canning and sauces.
- “Pink Boom”: Noted for large, meaty fruits and intense raspberry-pink color.
