WINSALL. A late-ripening, tall variety about 1.5 m high. Indeterminate, vigorous, with regular foliage, requires staking and pruning. It is characterized by a very high yield, especially in the second half of the season. The fruits store well after harvest. The variety is of American origin, an improved form of 'Ponderosa', bred by the Henderson Seed Company in 1924. The fruits are of the beefsteak type, weighing 300-500 g, and with good care can reach 800 g or more.
The shape is often flat-round, with pronounced ribbing at the top, and the shoulders may be slightly curved. The color is pink, with green shoulders that fully color up when fully ripe. The skin is thin, with a possible tendency to crack. The flesh is thick, fleshy, multi-chambered (up to 7 chambers), dense and juicy. The taste is excellent, sweet with a light piquant note, rich and harmonious. The variety is valued for its large fruit size, high yield, and expressive flavor.
