ZAPOTEC ANANAS RIBBED. A tall, highly productive, late-maturing variety that can impress even experienced collectors of rare tomatoes. In open ground, plants reach about 1.8 m in height, forming strong, dense, and spreading bushes with sturdy stems and abundant foliage that protects the fruit from scorching sun. The fruits are exceptionally striking—large to very large, weighing 300-600 g, with occasional true giants. Their surface is distinctly ribbed and tri-colored: at full ripeness the skin shows a picturesque mix of yellow, pink-raspberry, and orange-red shades, making every tomato unique.
The flesh is meaty, firm, and low-juicy, allowing the fruit to be sliced into generous wedges like a ripe melon. Flavor is rich and sweet with subtle fruity notes and almost no acidity. Perfect for fresh salads, impressive platters, and for collectors who value extraordinary tomatoes. The variety was observed in the garden of collector Jean-Pierre Tejero in the Bordeaux region. He grew five plants each of “Zapotec Pink Ribbed” and “Pineapple” side by side.
Four of the “Zapotec” plants produced fruits fully true to type, while the fifth bore fruits of correct shape but with an orange-yellow color. It was most likely a spontaneous mutation or an accidental cross-pollination. Seeds from these unusual fruits were carefully collected and will be tested next year by several collectors to monitor their development.
