BEAR PAW RED. A mid-early, high-yielding open-pollinated variety that has long been appreciated for its combination of large fruits, excellent flavor, and reliable productivity. It gets its name from the distinctive shape of its fruits: they are strongly flattened, large, and often ribbed at the base, truly resembling the imprint of a bear’s paw. The plant is vigorous and reaches approximately 1.3–1.5 m outdoors. The bush requires staking and regular removal of suckers and is best grown with one or two stems. It is important to remove the lower leaves and side shoots in a timely manner. Each truss usually produces 4–5 large fruits weighing around 500–800 g, so strong support is especially important.
The fruits are bright red, strongly flattened, meaty, and sugary when cut. The flesh is juicy, tender, and crumbly, with a rich tomato flavor and pronounced aroma. Thanks to their large size and meaty texture, the tomatoes are excellent for fresh eating, salads, sauces, and hot dishes, as well as for making homemade juice, purée, and tomato paste. The variety has high resistance to unfavorable conditions, including drought, and consistently produces a good harvest. This tomato is valued for its reliability, large meaty fruits, and rich flavor, which is why it has remained a favorite for outdoor cultivation for many years.
