ANCIENT HEART OF ACQUI TERME (CUORE ANTICO DI ACQUI TERME), Italy. The variety owes its name to the town of Acqui Terme in northern Italy. A legendary novelty that has driven thousands of collectors crazy! The fruits are so massive that the hand in the photo with the truss looks like a toy. Despite expectations, the trusses can support 4-5 gigantic fruits. The plant itself is incredibly vigorous! Indeterminate, mid-to-late season, very productive variety. A family heirloom from Italy. As of July 3, 2021, plant height in open ground was 210-220 cm.
By July 18, 2021 — around 250 cm, after which the growth slowed down and was no longer measured. This variety is sensitive to calcium levels in the soil. On July 30, 2021, one edge plant in the row had set 39 fruits. In the 2021 season, the first fruits began to ripen on July 21. One of the least seedy varieties we have ever grown. It’s almost impossible to collect a lot of seeds from these fruits. The fruit shape is extremely interesting. Inside is solid flesh — not tough, low-juiced, and nearly gel-free. To extract seeds, you must break the fruit into pieces or slice it.
VARIETY CHARACTERISTICS
Excellent low-acid flavor. The fruit shape is striking, ranging from ribbed hearts to totally flat forms. Plants are very strong and heavily leafed. There are loads of fruits, all huge and well protected by the foliage. An amazing variety — a true tomato wonder. A stunning, unique mid-season tomato that shocks with its appearance. These are massive, bright red, flattened heart-shaped fruits with perfect structure. And not a hint of green shoulders! At the base — plump shoulders that form vertical ribs all around the fruit. The shape can vary slightly from fruit to fruit. Inside — pure sweet flesh with a few seeds hidden in tiny cavities.
The taste is sweet and spicy, incredibly rich, not dry. Slight tang, sugary, and intensely aromatic. The flesh is firm, not mushy. Seed chambers are present but mostly hollow or contain very few seeds. The plant matches the size of the fruits — strong, leafy, with thick stems. Heavy fruit set — each truss holds 3–5 fruits weighing 800–1200 grams. The plant easily carries the load. Top marks for visual appeal! One of the top three heaviest varieties we’ve ever grown! A must-try!
