DWARF IDAHO GEM. An interesting modern dwarf tomato variety developed through the breeding work of enthusiasts from the United States and Australia. The initial cross was made by Sherry Long, while further selection, stabilization and refinement of the variety were carried out by Susan Oliverson with the participation of renowned breeder Craig LeHoullier and other members of the breeding community. In early 2022, the variety was introduced by Victory Seed Company, making it available to growers interested in dwarf tomato varieties.
The plant is strong and compact, yet quite vigorous for a dwarf variety. When grown outdoors, the bush reaches approximately 1 m in height, while in a greenhouse it can grow to around 1.2 m. One of the variety’s distinctive features is its large, wrinkled foliage, which gives the plant an unusual and decorative appearance. Thanks to its compact growth habit, Dwarf Idaho Gem is well suited to both outdoor and greenhouse cultivation, particularly where there is limited space for tall-growing varieties.
The fruits are flattened-round and develop a beautiful rich yellow color when ripe. They are relatively large for a dwarf tomato, weighing up to 200 g, with juicy, meaty flesh. The flavor is sweet, rich and well balanced, with a pleasant aroma and a pronounced tomato character. Dwarf Idaho Gem combines a compact, sturdy plant with large bright-yellow fruits, juicy flesh and excellent flavor, making it well suited for fresh eating, salads and collections of unusual dwarf tomato varieties.
