LIL'S FAVORITE. An indeterminate, mid-season, exceptionally productive tomato variety with a rich family history. In open ground, plants grow over 1.5 meters tall, forming a strong, well-foliated bush. This variety requires staking and pruning. The fruits are large, bright red, with glossy skin and characteristic ribbing near the stem. They are meaty, firm yet juicy, with a deep, rich-colored flesh. The flavor is rich and balanced, with a pronounced sweetness and a hint of acidity.
The aroma is intense, classic tomato — very pleasant. Fruit weight ranges from 200 to 500 grams, often reaching 600-650 grams. These tomatoes are ideal both for fresh consumption and for making sauces, juices, and other tomato preserves. The variety is considered a true piece of American tomato heritage, passed down from generation to generation.
HISTORY OF THE VARIETY
This variety was revived and improved from old archival family seed lines. It originated in Belleville, Illinois (USA). According to family legend, in 1985, Larry Watson from Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, received the seeds from his Aunt Lil when she visited for Christmas. At that time, she was 77 years old and said that this was her favorite tomato, which she had been growing since 1949.
She received the seeds from Mrs. Smith of Briar Hill, St. Clair County, Illinois. Mrs. Smith had inherited them from her mother, and the family had been growing the tomatoes in Chester, Illinois, for many years. The excellent flavor and stable yields have been confirmed by many positive reviews from gardeners around the world.
