LUCCHESE / INHABITANT OF LUCCA. Mid-season, very productive variety. Bright red, large, heavy fruits with perfect marketable shape and appearance. The plant reaches 1.5 meters tall in open ground, strong, with 3-4 fruits per cluster, each weighing 300-400 g. Not a single crack or blemish — like little toys. Shape is round-flattened with ribbed shoulders radiating from the stem. Very meaty and dense even inside, with almost no seed cavities. It doesn't leak but isn’t fibrous — juicy and incredibly fragrant!
Juices and sauces come out almost without water — pure tomato pulp, thick and bright. No need to cook it down to the desired consistency. Flesh is dense and beef-colored with little gel. Inherited from the Luccese family of Italian origin. Large bright red fruits, round with ribbing at the top. A well-balanced old-fashioned tomato flavor. Suitable both for sauce making and fresh consumption. The plant has indeterminate growth, regular leaf type, and vigorous development. It produces in the second half of the season.
FEATURES OF LARGE-FRUITED TOMATOES:
Large tomatoes have several features that distinguish them from small-fruited varieties:
- Size and weight: Large tomatoes weigh from 200 grams and more, with some varieties exceeding 1 kilogram.
- Fleshy structure: They typically have a denser and meatier texture with fewer seeds, making them perfect for slicing, salads, sauces, or juice.
- Flavor quality: Large-fruited tomatoes often have a richer, sweeter flavor that’s highly valued in cooking.
- Growing requirements: These tomatoes are often more demanding — they require good lighting, feeding, and protection from diseases and pests. More nutrients and moisture are needed to develop large fruits.
- Ripening time: Many large varieties take longer to mature compared to small-fruited ones. This should be considered in planting schedules.
- Cracking sensitivity: Due to their size, the fruits may crack, especially with irregular watering or sudden humidity changes.
- Shape and color diversity: Large tomatoes can be round, flattened, heart-shaped, and come in red, pink, yellow, orange, purple, or even green.
These traits make large tomatoes a favorite among gardeners, though they may require more effort to grow.
