OVITA. An ancient heirloom from Peru. An amazing tomato variety with a rich history that has come down to us from centuries past. A tall, vigorous, mid-season plant with exceptional productivity. In open ground, plants reach about 1.8 m, forming strong stems with bright green, regular-type foliage. One of its main advantages is its colossal yield — the number of fruits is so great that it is impossible to count them: at the end of the season, we didn’t even harvest the last wave.
Fruits are elegant, pear-shaped with slight ribbing, pink in color, weighing just over 50 g. At the beginning of fruiting, the taste may seem noticeably tart, but as the crop ripens, more and more sweetness appears. In our opinion, the flavor deserves a 4+ rating — a harmonious balance of sweetness and light acidity. According to foreign sources, the homeland of this heirloom is pre-Columbian Peru, where it was likely bred by the Incas.
The plants have high disease tolerance, extended fruiting until frost, and a pleasant fruit aroma. Under favorable conditions, and when protected from cold and disease, they can even bear fruit in winter. The flesh is not overly juicy, making the fruits an excellent choice for thick sauces. Thanks to their partially hollow seed cavities, these tomatoes are perfect for stuffing.
