FRANCHI RED PEAR, FRENCH RED PEARS. A mid-season, indeterminate, highly productive variety with striking bright red, large truffle-shaped fruits. The fruits are broad at the base, pear-shaped, with deep pronounced ribs and no green shoulders. Plants are vigorous, reaching about 1.5 m (5 ft) outdoors. Each truss carries 3–4 fruits weighing up to 600 g, and the heavy clusters often bend under the weight of the harvest. Inside, the flesh is deep red, aromatic, with 5–6 seed cavities and thick, meaty walls. Fruits are very firm, mostly pear-shaped, uniform, and of excellent quality.
In the 2025 season, the fruits were not exceptionally sweet but impressed with their rich aroma and well-balanced flavor. We rated the taste 4 out of 6, while productivity earned the maximum 6 out of 6. Overall, considering all its qualities, we believe this is one of the finest varieties. Franchi is the surname of an Italian immigrant family and the name of the company they founded, so the correct translation of the variety is "Franchi Red Pear." The flavor is balanced, meaty, juicy (with a few small cavities), pleasantly sweet, and rich. Top marks for beauty and productivity!
