SYZRAN ROSE. A legendary old heirloom tomato variety originating from the city of Syzran in the Samara region of Russia. For many decades, its seeds have been preserved by gardeners and collectors and passed down from generation to generation. Syzran Rose is renowned for its large fruits, rich aroma, and outstanding flavor reminiscent of traditional tomatoes grown in a grandmother’s garden. The plant is indeterminate and tall, with sturdy stems and moderate foliage. In a greenhouse, the plant typically reaches 1.2–1.5 m in height. This is a mid-early variety with an extended fruiting period.
The fruits are large and flattened-round, sometimes slightly ribbed around the stem end, with delicate pink or raspberry-pink skin. Tomatoes typically weigh 300–500 g, while individual fruits can reach 600–700 g under favorable growing conditions. The flesh is firm, meaty, and very juicy, with a sugary texture when cut, few seeds, and thin, delicate skin. The flavor is rich and well-balanced, predominantly sweet, with the characteristic aroma of old heirloom tomatoes. The variety is excellent for fresh eating, summer salads, thick homemade tomato juice, sauces, and tomato paste.
Due to their thin skin and high juiciness, the fruits do not tolerate long-distance transportation well and are not suitable for extended storage. Syzran Rose can be grown both outdoors and in greenhouses. To obtain a good crop of large tomatoes, the plants should be secured to a sturdy support and pruned to one or two, or alternatively two or three, main stems, with regular removal of side shoots.
Special feature: Alongside the classic pink form, a rare yellow-orange variant known as “Yellow Syzran Rose” also exists. It is distinguished by its brightly colored flesh and honey-sweet flavor.
