VALENCIA. This variety has an interesting history: it is a heritage selection from the state of Maine (USA), derived from the commercial variety “Sunray,” which was popular back in the 1940s. The reason for its name is unknown; it may have been introduced from Spain. It is notable for its hardiness, producing abundant harvests of bright, sunny tomatoes even in variable weather, consistently ranking among the best for aroma and texture. Medium-tall, mid-season, and reliably high-yielding.
In open ground, plants reach about 1.2 m, forming strong, well-foliated bushes with regular leaf type and indeterminate growth. Flower clusters set abundantly, ensuring rich harvests throughout the season. Fruits are round and slightly ribbed near the stem, borne in clusters of 4-6. The skin is bright orange, sunny, smooth, and crack-free, allowing the tomatoes to transport and store well without losing their market appeal.
Fruit weight ranges from 120 to 250 g. The flesh is dense and meaty yet very juicy, with few seeds. The flavor is complex and well-balanced, with pronounced sweetness, rich tomato aroma, and bright fruity notes. Thanks to its firm texture and rich taste, the fruit is excellent for fresh salads, slicing, garnishing dishes, and making juices, sauces, and hot preserves. Overall, it is a beautiful, productive tomato, recommended for open-ground cultivation.
