WEDEKIND HEIRLOOM PINK. An old German variety with a fascinating history, delighting gardeners for more than a century with its reliability and outstanding flavor. This mid-sized, mid-season, highly productive tomato thrives equally well in open ground or under light cover. Plants are compact and tidy, about 1.2 m tall, with strong stems and good foliage that easily support heavy fruit clusters. The variety retains all the best qualities of classic European tomatoes.
The fruits are large, averaging 300-400 g, round with attractive gentle ribbing near the stem, and display a rich pink, almost raspberry hue with a delicate sheen. The flesh is meaty, tender, and very juicy with few seed cavities. Its flavor is distinctly sweet with a pleasant hint of acidity—an excellent choice for lovers of old-fashioned pink tomatoes. Perfect for fresh salads, juice, and thick sauces, and they hold their shape beautifully when sliced. This variety is a true family heirloom.
Its story goes back to the early 1900s, when Mr. Wedekind’s grandfather brought seeds from Germany to Minnesota, USA. Since then, the tomato has been continuously grown and passed down through the family. The seeds were first shared with a wider audience in the 1985 Seed Savers Exchange Yearbook by John Pavola of Sauk Centre, Minnesota, who received them directly from Mr. Wedekind.
