WES. Is a rare, large-fruited family heirloom variety of unknown origin, most likely from the USA. It was introduced in 1994 in the Seed Savers Yearbook by the well-known collector Carolyn Homme. The plants are vigorous and highly productive: in open ground they form strong, tall bushes up to 1.8 m with a sturdy yet tidy stem and moderately leafy canopy, which makes maintenance easier. The fruits are heart-shaped with slightly wavy shoulders and small ribs near the stem. Average fruit weight is 250-400 g, but with good care some specimens can reach 600 g. The skin is smooth, deep red, free of green shoulders, resistant to cracking, and transports well.
The flesh is very dense, meaty, almost seedless, juicy and sweet, with a rich, deep classic tomato flavor and a subtle sweetness. The variety is famous for its unique “beefy” texture and delicate aroma, making it one of the best red heart-type tomatoes. WES is equally good for fresh salads and slices as well as for making thick juices, sauces, and paste. It bears reliably even in variable weather, making it a valuable choice for enthusiasts and collectors of rare varieties. Recommended for open-ground cultivation, it deserves a place in any collection for its combination of beauty, productivity, and refined taste.
