BARLOW JAP, BARLOW JAPONAISE, USA. A family heirloom variety from Brita Barlow, a native of Shelbyville, Kentucky. The original seeds were brought from Japan — Brita’s grandfather received them from a friend who secretly smuggled them out at the end of World War II. Initially, the plants were weak, but through careful selection, Brita’s grandfather bred stronger and healthier generations. Fruit weight typically ranges from 300 to 700 grams.
Eventually, they produced superior fruits — so much so that it became the primary crop of the Barlow company. The fruits are dark pink, round, and slightly flattened with subtle ribbing at the top. Deep indentation at the stem scar. Juicy and meaty flesh with small seed cavities containing few seeds. Mild and sweet flavor, ideal for both fresh consumption and cooking or canning. Potato leaf variety, indeterminate growth type. Plant height ranges from 1.8 to 2 m.
