BASAJAUN. A rare family heirloom tomato variety that has been passed down from generation to generation. Originates from the gardener Ion Cuso Ureta from the town of Algorta, Biscay province, Basque Country (Spain). The variety is valued for its vigorous plants, large fruit size, and outstanding fruit quality. The variety is mid-season, the plants are vigorous, reaching a height of about 1.5 m in open ground conditions. The bushes are powerful, well-leafed, with high yield output and stable fruiting. The fruits are very large, round-flattened in shape, weighing 350-700 g, with individual specimens possibly being even larger.
The flesh is dense, very meaty, juicy. The taste is mild, sweet, harmonious, with a tasting score of 5 points, without sharp acidity. According to the classic description, the variety is considered red-fruited, however, in our plantings, the fruits had a pink color, with all other varietal traits matching completely. This may indicate either a mislabeling or temporary color instability, which sometimes occurs in old family heirloom varieties. Basajaun is excellent for fresh consumption, salads, and slicing. This is a variety with history and character, an ideal choice for collectors and connoisseurs of giant, meaty, and truly tasty tomatoes
