CHOCOLATE PEARS. Tall, early, very productive variety with powerful bushes. Fruits try to hide among the leaves, but there are more of them than leaves. The yield is astonishing. The plants are heavily overloaded with fruits gathered in dense clusters that completely cover the plant. This overload affects the flavor, and fruits at the bottom of the plant can be tastier.
While preparing the description of this variety, we tasted dozens of fruits — each one had a different flavor, ranging from very spicy (not sour) and aromatic to pleasantly sweet. For taste qualities, we confidently give it a solid 5 out of 5. Each cluster contains 7 red-chocolate-colored fruits.
FRUITS AND FLAVOR
The fruits are dense, very attractive, do not crack, and hang on the bushes until frost without losing quality. They don’t rot, are shelf-stable, very marketable, and can be harvested in clusters. Leaves are broad and potato-like, but not large. The shape is beautiful and rare — like a skittle or bottle. Fruits ripen fully without hard green shoulders. They are chocolate-colored and firm.
They have an ideal market appearance and can be cut off with clusters for long-term storage without losing quality. Inside — flesh with two seed chambers, medium-thick walls, lots of juice, and a spicy, very sweet flavor! Perfect for fresh use and canning alike. Fruits until frost! Top marks for beauty, taste, and yield! Recommended as a universal variety.
CHOCOLATE VARIETIES:
These are varieties with brown or dark burgundy fruits that have special characteristics. Here are a few specifics about growing and features of chocolate tomatoes:
-
Color and taste: The dark brown color comes from a combination of anthocyanins (purple pigments) and lycopene (red pigment). Chocolate tomatoes have a rich, sweet taste with mild acidity and smoky notes.
-
Sugar content: They often have a higher sugar content. This creates a sweet flavor balanced by light acidity, giving a complex taste.
-
Disease resistance: Many chocolate varieties are highly disease-resistant, though some may be susceptible to late blight. Monitor plant health and use preventive measures.
-
Productivity: Like most exotic varieties, chocolate tomatoes vary in productivity. Some are highly productive, others yield less but offer superb flavor.
-
Growing conditions: They grow well in both greenhouses and open ground. They love warmth and need regular watering, but avoid overwatering to prevent root rot.
-
Varieties: There are many chocolate varieties — for example, "Chocolate Pot", "Black Prince", "Chocolate Cherry", and others — each with unique size, taste, and ripening period.
