COEUR DE SURPRIZ (HEART OF SURPRISE), France. The variety was developed by Sébastien Berthier. A stunning mid-early variety! A rare combination of beauty, productivity, and exquisite flavor! Multicolored, green (at full ripeness – olive), with red and golden streaks appearing on the skin. Bushes are strong with thick stems.
Fruit shape – small plum-shaped hearts weighing 70–100 g, sometimes up to 150 g. In cross-section – green with a red "tie," thick walls. Flavor – sweet, delicate, spicy-sweet, fruity. Very tasty! The plant reaches 1.5–1.8 m in open ground, vigorous! Each truss produces 4–6 fruits. Indeterminate, mid-season variety with prolonged fruiting.
This variety had the sweetest fruits in the 2017 season. It became one of our discoveries of the year – a true surprise. The fruits have a wonderful fruity sweetness with a hint of acidity and a strawberry-pineapple-fruit taste that pleasantly surprised us.
YIELD
Some fruits reached up to 180 grams, and from a double blossom, a neat broad-shouldered fruit – a "boat" – weighing 320 g was produced. A wonderful, beautiful variety, and super tasty every year. At the time of counting, each bush had 30–34 fruits set. The last harvest before frost yielded 20–40 fruits per plant. This variety is mistakenly thought to be only moderately productive.
Even in terms of weight, the yield is quite decent. And considering the taste, the total weight of the harvest, in my opinion, becomes a third-level concern. A French source states: "The variety was developed as drought-tolerant, for heavy soils, and therefore will never be fully stable. On different soil types and with different watering conditions, results may vary slightly."
To create this variety, the following parent varieties were used: "Green Zebra" + "Copia" + "Green Heart Beef Japanese." The cross was made by Tom Wagner. A group of French volunteers selected and stabilized several breeding lines. As a result, five new varieties were born: Johanna, Mystery de Berthier, Mystery, Coeur de Surpriz, and Surpriz.
