ELMER’S OLD GERMAN. An old family heirloom from Germany. This is a mid-season, indeterminate tomato variety. In open ground, plants reach a height of up to 1.8 m and require pruning and staking. The yield is consistently high, above average, making this variety both delicious and practical for cultivation. The fruits are large, with a unique round-heart shape, often featuring attractive ribs or facets. Their color is soft pink, sometimes with a pearlescent sheen, adding to their ornamental appeal. The flesh is meaty, velvety, and very juicy. The taste is rich and sweet, with a pronounced tomato flavor and subtle fruity notes. This variety can rightfully be considered a dessert tomato-perfect for fresh salads and raw consumption.
Average fruit weight ranges from 220 to 600 grams, but under optimal conditions, some can exceed 700 grams. Due to their structure, fruits resist cracking and rotting, but become quite soft when overripe, so they should be handled with care. The variety is disease-resistant, low-maintenance, and suitable for both greenhouses and open field cultivation. Thanks to its attractive appearance and outstanding flavor, this tomato is one of the personal favorites of renowned tomato collector Gary Ibsen. It is truly an exceptional variety with a rich history and superb taste. Flavor rating: a solid 5 out of 5. An ideal choice for those who appreciate heirloom varieties, unique flavor, and large-fruited tomatoes.
